Beast Buffet - Improved Version
Beast Buffet – Improved Version
Beast Buffet is a small arcade prototype based on my Trijam #374 project.
The game started as a simple 3-hour jam idea, then I improved it afterwards as a school project.
The player has to feed a picky beast before its hunger reaches zero.
The beast asks for a specific food, so you have to bring the correct item while avoiding toxic slime puddles.
As the game progresses, the beast becomes harder to satisfy.
The levels get more dangerous, the hunger pressure increases, and the player has to react faster.
Creative intention
My main idea was to create a small panic feeding game.
Instead of fighting the monster, the player has to take care of it.
The danger comes from the pressure of time, the toxic slime, and the fact that the beast only accepts the food it asked for.
I wanted the game to stay simple and readable, but still create tension through short decisions:
Do I go directly to the food?
Do I risk crossing the slime?
Do I grab the emergency snack before it is too late?
Improved version
For this improved version, I focused on making the original prototype clearer, more readable, and more alive.
I added several improvements to make the game easier to understand while playing:
- A level system
- Progressive difficulty
- More toxic slime puddles depending on the level
- An emergency snack mechanic
- A visual food indicator showing what the beast wants
- Small pop-up reactions above the beast
- A short background music loop made with BeepBox
- Clearer feedback messages
- Better balancing
- A more complete title screen
- The HEAJ logo
I also tried to correct some unfair situations from the first version, especially when food could appear too close to dangerous areas.
Gameplay
The goal is to bring the correct food to the beast before its hunger reaches zero.
The beast can ask for:
- Apple
- Meat
- Fish
If you bring the wrong food, you lose hunger.
If you walk on toxic slime, you also lose hunger.
When the hunger gets low, an emergency snack can appear to help you survive.
